  • Environmental factors: We assess the sleep environment itself. Is the bedroom cool, dark, and quiet? Is the mattress comfortable? Are there disturbances from a partner, pets, or neighborhood noise?
  • Objective tools: While patients often bring data from smartwatches, current research suggests these metrics are unreliable for diagnostic decision-making. Instead, we use a sleep diary (paper or app-based) for 1-2 weeks to capture bedtime, wake time, awakenings, naps, and perceived sleep quality. We also use validated questionnaires like the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) to quantify severity, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale to measure daytime sleepiness, and the STOP-Bang questionnaire for sleep apnea risk.
