  2. Decreased CO2 Tolerance: Your brain’s respiratory centers become hypersensitive to even slight increases in CO2. When you exercise, CO2 levels naturally rise as a byproduct of metabolism. For a mouth breather with low CO2 tolerance, the brain perceives this normal increase as a sign of suffocation, triggering a powerful alarm and a panic response.

The Solution:
For at least the first two to three weeks of retraining, I insist on nasal breathing only during all cardio sessions. This forces you to slow down and breathe more efficiently. It naturally increases your CO2 levels, improving oxygen delivery and, over time, increasing your brain’s tolerance to CO2 fluctuations. This simple change is one of the most effective ways to break the link between exercise and panic.

I recommend taking the following three supplements together about 30 minutes before any panic-provoking activity, whether it’s the sauna, a workout, public speaking, or a crowded mall.     • Ongoing: Gradually increase the duration by 1-2 minutes every week or two, always staying within a zone of comfortable challenge. Your mantra should be “arousal without alarm.”
  • For Cardio:
    • Week 1-3: Focus exclusively on Zone 2 cardio. This is a low-intensity level of exercise where you can comfortably hold a conversation. Crucially, as mentioned earlier, practice nasal breathing only. This will naturally keep your heart rate from spiking too high and will retrain your CO2 tolerance. A typical session would be 20-30 minutes. No max effort. No sprints. No high-intensity intervals.
    • Week 4-6: If Zone 2 feels safe and comfortable, you can begin to introduce very short intervals of higher intensity. For example, within a 30-minute session, you might do a 30-second burst of Zone 3 or 4 effort, followed by several minutes of recovery in Zone 2.
    • Ongoing: Slowly increase the duration and frequency of these harder intervals, always listening to your body. The goal is to teach your amygdala that your heart rate can go up and come back down safely.

This gradual process supports neuroplasticity—your brain’s ability to reorganize by forming new neural connections. Each time you complete a session without panicking, you are weakening the old “arousal = danger” pathway and strengthening a new, more accurate “arousal = safety” pathway.
