Scaphoid Fracture Causes and Recovery Insights

Individuals who have fractured their scaphoid bone may experience pain and swelling in the wrist just below the thumb. Can immobilization with a cast and physical therapy help?

Scaphoid Fracture

A scaphoid fracture is a break in one of the wrist’s small or carpal bones. This type of fracture occurs most often after a fall onto an outstretched hand. Symptoms typically include swelling and pain in the wrist just below the base of the thumb. These fractures can be difficult to diagnose since they don’t always appear on an X-ray. If the X-ray is negative and the healthcare provider suspects a scaphoid fracture, an MRI may be necessary. Surgery may be required in more severe cases or when the injury is not healing correctly. (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2023)

A Break In The – Navicular Bone

The scaphoid is one of eight carpal bones in the wrist. It is located just below the thumb’s base and is shaped like a kidney bean. This bone can be identified by holding a thumbs-up position and feeling for the hollow between the two tendons below your thumb. The scaphoid is located at the base of the hollow. A break in the scaphoid bone most commonly occurs in the middle of the bone but can also happen at either end. A scaphoid fracture can be displaced or non-displaced (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2023)

Displaced Fracture

  • It is when the bone fragments have moved out of alignment.

Non-displaced Fracture

  • It is when the fragments are still in their normal location in the hand.

The scaphoid’s blood supply comes from a small vessel that enters the most distant part of the bone and flows back through the bone. Because of this one small blood supply, a fracture in the center can stop the circulation to the proximal portion of the bone. Because of this, scaphoid fractures need immediate diagnosis and treatment.

Symptoms

Pain or deep aching on the thumb-side of the wrist, typically after a fall on an outstretched arm, could be a scaphoid fracture. Other symptoms experienced include: (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2023)

  • Tenderness at the base of the hollow area.
  • Pain at the base of the hollow area.
  • Swelling in the wrist
  • Difficulty gripping objects

Pain can become worse from: (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2023)

  • Grasping
  • Pulling
  • Pushing
  • Pinching

Diagnosis

A healthcare provider will evaluate the hand for tenderness and pain in the hollow and/or the bone. If a break is suspected, they will order an X-ray. (Clementson M., Björkman A., & Thomsen N. O. B. 2020) Many patients are diagnosed with a wrist sprain when they have a fracture. Diagnosis can be difficult because the fracture often doesn’t appear on X-rays until weeks after the healing process starts. Physicians commonly treat a wrist injury as a scaphoid fracture initially and then repeat X-rays within two weeks. (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2023) If the injury doesn’t show on an X-ray, the provider may order an MRI, as these fractures can be easier to see on an MRI. An MRI can help ensure appropriate treatment immediately. (Wong S. B. S., & Peh W. C. G. 2019)

Treatment

If a wrist fracture is diagnosed, the wrist will be immobilized in a cast. However, a healthcare provider may also put the wrist in a cast if the X-ray is negative but they suspect a fracture. This will stabilize the injury until an MRI can be performed. With immobilization and follow-up treatment, scaphoid fractures often heal without surgery. Repeat X-rays are taken over several weeks or months so the provider can make sure the injury is healing correctly. If it is not healing correctly, surgery may be recommended. (Clementson M., Björkman A., & Thomsen N. O. B. 2020) If the fracture is displaced, healing correctly may be a challenge. In this case, a physician may recommend initial surgery to reposition the bones. (Clementson M., Björkman A., & Thomsen N. O. B. 2020) This type of surgery involves pinning the bone in place with screws.

With the wrist in a cast, individuals will be instructed on activities to avoid placing even a small amount of strain (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2023)

  • Lifting
  • Pushing
  • Pulling objects that weigh more than one pound.
  • Sports activities
  • Throwing
  • Climbing
  • Using tools or machinery that vibrate.

Rehabilitation is an important part of healing because immobilization takes a long time. Wrist range-of-motion exercises can be started, followed by strengthening exercises for the wrist flexors and extensors. Supination, pronation, and grip exercises are also part of physical therapy.

Complications

Scaphoid fractures can lead to serious complications, especially when not properly treated. These include: (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2023) (Almigdad A. et al., 2024)

Can mustard be a low-calorie alternative to higher-fat condiments for individuals trying to reduce calorie intake?

Mustard

Prepared mustard is a common condiment used around the country. It is a low-calorie, highly flavored condiment that can replace more calorie-dense options. The familiar condiment combines mustard seeds with vinegar, salt, lemon, and other ingredients. There are also different varieties made from brown or black mustard seeds.

Health Benefits

Mustard is considered healthy because it contains antioxidants that provide various health benefits, including anti-cancer, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. (Mazumder A., Dwivedi A., & du Plessis J. 2016) Although not associated with significant health benefits, mustard is a low-calorie alternative to many higher-fat condiments, like mayonnaise. Different types of mustard seeds are used for health purposes. For example, some herbalists use white mustard seeds to clear the throat when mixed with honey (Ewing, Sarah, 1999). Antioxidants include isothiocyanates and sinigrin.

  • Isothiocyanates, the oil that gives mustard its pungent taste, have anti-cancer properties for breast, lung, GI tract, and prostate cancers.
  • However, the mechanism remains unclear, and more research is needed to determine the efficacy of mustard’s health benefits for cancer.
  • Isothiocyanates may also help manage diabetes and reduce unhealthy cholesterol, providing cardiovascular protection and neurological benefits that may help autistic individuals. More research is needed. (Palliyaguru D. et al., 2018)
  • Sinigrin is another antioxidant. Research shows this antioxidant has anti-cancer, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. (Mazumder A., Dwivedi A., & du Plessis J. 2016)

Nutrition

A single serving is usually about a teaspoon. A serving of prepared yellow and spicy mustard provides only about three calories. (U.S. Department of Agriculture, 2019) Its nutritional profile includes a rich supply of essential minerals, including calcium, iron, manganese, phosphorus, and zinc. It is also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, tryptophan, phosphorus, iron, and protein. The seeds are also a very good source of selenium. Most calories come from carbohydrates, but because the calorie count is so low, these carbohydrates are not likely to significantly affect daily intake. Dijon mustard may provide more calories. A single serving of Dijon may contain up to 10 calories.

Preparation and Storage

Yellow mustard and Dijon are easy to find. Try course mustard varieties with distinct textures and seeds. Buy in small quantities, as mustard can lose flavor with time. Once opened, store in the refrigerator for up to one year. Mustard imparts a strong, spicy taste that pairs well with meat and seafood and can also be used to make salad dressings.

Side Effects

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognizes mustard as safe (GRAS). Eating too much can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, and gut inflammation. However, mustard and mustard seed allergies are not uncommon. Symptoms may be mild or severe and generally appear shortly after consuming the product. Individuals may experience a rash or a tingly, itchy feeling in the mouth. Difficulty breathing is also possible. Other foods derived from the mustard plant, including leaves, seeds, and flowers, sprouted seeds, oil, and foods that contain these, are likely to cause reactions in those with mustard allergies.

Learn How to Perform Trapezius Self Massage for Pain Relief

Can individuals who sit for long hours daily prevent tight neck and shoulder muscles by improving their posture, regularly stretching, and massaging their trapezius muscles?

Trapezius Self Massage

The trapezius muscle is a triangle-shaped muscle in the upper back that starts at the base of the neck, spans the length of the upper shoulders, and extends into the middle back. This muscle’s main function is stabilizing and moving the scapula/shoulder blade. The trapezius also helps to move the head, neck, arms, shoulders, and torso, stabilizes the spine, and plays an important role in posture. Physical and mental stress can tighten the trapezius muscle, leading to neck and shoulder pain. Learning to perform a trapezius self-massage can ease tension and provide pain relief. (Domingo A. R. et al., 2017)

Anatomy

The trapezius consists of three parts in three different areas of the back. The bottom of the skull, across the shoulders, and down to the mid back. A trapezius self-massage focuses on the upper portion of the traps. This part is located at the top of the shoulders. To find the upper trapezius, cross one arm in front of your body so that you can place the palm on top of the other shoulder.

For a trapezius self-massage, you need to know that there are two areas where your upper traps start and where the muscle connects to a bone. The first point is on the bottom of the skull, close to the center of the back of the skull. Start there with your fingers and trace the muscle down the back of the neck to where the shoulders widen. If you get lost, You can walk your fingers up or down the muscle on either side to relocate its origin at the base of the skull, the vertebra at the base of your neck that sticks out. This is C-7, another of the upper trapezius’s origin sites. (University of Washington Department of Radiology, 2025

Massage Technique

Massage oil is optional but can hydrate the skin during a massage. You can perform the trapezius self-massage using your hands.

Start at the Base of The Neck

Choose one shoulder to work at a time.

  • Raise the arm on the opposite side of your body.
  • Reach this arm across your body and fold it around your neck so that your fingers rest at the back base of your neck.
  • Apply a decent amount of pressure to the muscle while moving your fingers in a circular motion.
  • The action is similar to kneading dough.
  • Massage this area at the base of your neck for about 30 seconds to start.
  • If this part of your muscle is sore, you can massage it longer.

Slowly Work Out Towards The End of The Shoulder

Once you have spent about 30 seconds massaging the muscle at the base of the neck, work your way out toward the end of your shoulder.

  • In close increments, in your fingers across the trapezius muscle, spending at least 30 seconds at each point.
  • Follow the muscle until you reach the end of the shoulder.
  • Apply enough pressure, and use slow, rhythmic movements so that you feel relief.
  • If the pressure is not relieving or makes you wince, it’s too much.

Repeat as Needed

Repeat each side two to three times before switching to the other shoulder. After massaging, you may notice a certain trapezius area is particularly sore or tense. Zero in on those areas a little longer. Remember to relax throughout the trapezius self-massage. This is an opportunity to learn where tension is in your neck and shoulders and how to apply pressure to relieve it. This knowledge can also help you be mindful throughout your day, whether sitting, doing chores, or other physical activities. If you notice scrunching or slouching, massage the trapezius and remind yourself to keep your shoulders relaxed.

Benefits

Tension and tightness in the trapezius muscle are common, particularly among individuals who work in an office, do manual labor, or deal with a lot of stress. (Marker R. J. Campeau S., & Maluf K. S. 2017) Trapezius strains are a common overuse injury that is more likely to happen when the muscle is tight. (Salavati M. et al., 2017) The injury can cause unhealthy posture to avoid the pain. This poor posture will place more stress on the muscles, leading to a cycle of poor posture and chronic pain. A trapezius self-massage can benefit in many ways, including:

  • Improved blood circulation
  • Better quality of sleep
  • Improved posture
  • Improved range of motion
  • Decreased swelling
  • Faster recovery after workouts

Like any other muscle in the body, the trapezius can be injured and requires special treatment to recover. Sometimes, the neck or shoulder pain may not come from the trapezius muscle. Consider seeing a healthcare provider if you have pain in your neck or shoulder that doesn’t get better within a week or two, especially if it isn’t responding to at-home treatment. Regardless of how long you have been experiencing pain or stiffness, contact a healthcare provider if it prevents you from getting adequate sleep or interfering with daily activities.   • There is sudden pressure or pain in the left shoulder, which can sometimes signal a heart attack.

It’s important to take regular breaks to stretch and move your muscles. You can release tension in the trapezius by doing shoulder shrugs throughout the day and stretching regularly. When the trapezius feels tight or sore, give yourself a massage.

Is Acupuncture Painful?

Acupuncture is a procedure where extremely fine needles are inserted into pressure points in the body. A traditional Chinese medicine technique used to alleviate pain and enhance physical and emotional well-being. (Harvard Health, 2023) It can be beneficial for anyone dealing with persistent painful conditions, such as back pain, sciatica, arthritis-related discomfort, headaches, and post-surgery pain. It’s also a supportive option for individuals experiencing hot flashes and generalized inflammation, making it a versatile choice for holistic health. People undergoing acupuncture experience minimal pain, usually mild pressure or soreness during or after. However, choosing an experienced practitioner and communicating with them during the treatment is the best way to avoid increased pain.

When Performed Correctly, It Should Not Hurt

Many fear that acupuncture will be painful. However, this is not the case because the procedure uses extremely fine needles. One study of pediatric patients found that 87% reported minimal to no pain while having the treatment (Gold J. I. et al., 2023). Improper needle placement is one of the most common reasons that patients experience pain during or after treatment (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2025). This is why it is important to be treated by a licensed practitioner who is well-versed in treating specific conditions.

Soreness After Treatment

It is relatively uncommon to experience pain after receiving acupuncture. About 10% of individuals experience minor soreness after the treatment (Kelly R. B. & Willis J. 2019). The soreness is typically felt in the areas where the needles were inserted.

Situations When Pain Can Present

A small group of those who undergo acupuncture may experience some pain. It is most frequently seen in the following: (Harvard Health, 2023)

  • The acupuncturist is inexperienced and inserts the needle incorrectly or not in the right area.
  • The needles are inserted more deeply than normal or with too much pressure.
  • The patient has a lower pain threshold and/or is more sensitive to needles.
  • The practitioner uses higher gauge/thicker needles.

It is important for individuals who have not had acupuncture before to discuss the procedure and any concerns with their provider beforehand. The acupuncturist may be able to perform a trial needle insertion to provide a preview of the treatment. During the initial session, they may use fewer needles or target a smaller area. Constantly communicate with the acupuncturist during the treatment. This allows them to adjust the needles causing soreness or discontinue the procedure if there is increased pain.

Acupuncture Process

Modern medicine explains acupuncture’s benefits. When the needles are inserted, they stimulate the release of endorphins, opioids, immune system cells, and neurohormones. These chemicals help reduce and relieve pain and modify how the body perceives it. They may also impact blood pressure, body temperature, and central nervous system function. (Harvard Health, 2023)

Pressure Points: Is Acupuncture Painful On Certain Body Parts?

Acupuncture can cause some increased soreness in certain body areas. This is especially true when needles are inserted into less muscle or fat regions. Thin individuals with less soft tissue may also experience a stinging sensation as needles are inserted. During A Session

The first acupuncture session may consist of the following:

  • The practitioner goes over medical history and current symptoms.
  • The practitioner examines the body and may also examine the tongue to assess for any present imbalances.
  • The patient will lie or sit on a table.
  • Sterilized needles are inserted into the affected areas one at a time.

  • A typical acupuncture session is about 20 to 30 minutes. (Kaiser Permanente, 2021)

Self-Care After Treatment

Most cases of soreness after treatment will resolve in one to three days. During this time, here are a few recommendations to alleviate any soreness symptoms:

  • Apply ice to the areas of soreness.
  • Gently stretch the sore areas.
  • Increase fluid intake.
  • Soak in a warm bath with Epsom salts or magnesium oil.
  • Perform light aerobic exercise.
